A unique and intense journey through the History of Portuguese music revealing the fascinating origins of Fado, the Portuguese song classified by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The journey starts in the Renaissance—the time of the glorious Portuguese Discoveries—and ends in the 20th century, when Fado became recognized as the Portuguese National Song. In between, they visit different musical traditions, like the sombre Sacred Polyphony associated with death and sin (early-17th century), the 'Negro' Vilancicos from a monastery in Coimbra, full of exotic rhythms from Africa and South America (late-17th century), and the expressive and refined Opera Arias from the Portuguese Golden Age (18th century).
